Ok just posted the ipod repair thread but I am cleanning my computer up and storing my pics/music on an external hard drive. Before I delete them from my computer and rely on the back up hd wanted to see what everyone else does to back up these. Should i buy a second hd to be safe or????? Kind of wary of taking them off the computer, but if it dies I know i am screwed just like when the ipods did. Am I being paranoid, or should i be ok deleting them from here and putting them on the external hd. or is there an online storage you use just in case?

Just transfered my music and have 10,636 songs to my external, cannot imagine having to find/reload them all!!! So another question here, what do you do to make sure they are saved and safe? Eventually I have to load the rest of my music which should be 30-40 gig more and want to make sure I only do it once. Should end up with 60-90 gig stored.

I put all of my music to an external HD. I don't even keep it on my computer at all, it just bogs it down....too much music. If I want to listen to my Itunes I actually have to have my HD plugged in, which isn't a big deal, I usually have it in my school bag anyway. I don't do online storage, seems like a waste of money. If you want to double up security, I'd buy another external, I'm always wanting a newer, bigger one anyway.

Thanks, looks like I will have to look for another hd. but have the same problem, just to many pics and to much music on the puter so trying to free up some space

I think there is a back up utility for Itunes and you could probably back it up to an aux. hard drive.

I've been worrying about the same thing. Problem is... I'm too cheap to buy an external HD! I know I need one though.

I had some cheap thumb drives that I would load up and play in the car. They were color coded, red, green and blue. Soft, hard, eclectic...

You can organize them in folders and make your own playlists from your pc.

I just went through a hard drive crash not too long ago so I can sympathize. I keep my music on one hard drive (and an iPod and an old Dell 20GB DJ) that I use and I bought a second that I only use as a backup. Wal-Mart (yes, I hate them too) had some 300GB Seagate on sale for $60 so I bought one to use as my backup.

Ideally I'd use a SSD since they are much more resistant to damage but they're still expensive so I settle for having multiple copies.

You can buy a terabyte hard drive, just go for it, don't mess with a dj if you are already into iPods. Might be nice to have, but first things first, you want something that you can just to a "backup" to every so often of your entire hard drive.

I do the same as snoopy... I got two terabyte externals. One stays plugged into my PC and is backed up weekly and I back up the other one about once a month or when I think about it...

I'm the WORST when it comes to backing up, but I know a couple of theories.

1. Redundancy Rules. Back up twice. Two different locations. Whether that be 2 external HD's, or DVD's and 1 external HD.

2. Back-up's are BACK-UPS not what you use for listening from. Put the songs you listen to on a regular basis, on your machine. Leave the DVD's and External HD's alone. It's not a back-up if it's your only/main source now is it.

3. I bought an 500gb hard drive for under $70 a few months ago. They are cheap enough that you can afford 2 if it means not losing thousands of dollars worth of music.

4. Keep your back-up HD's or DVD's in a good, secure location, and remember where they are and what is on them.

Oh yes, and "thumb drives" have an EXTREMELY high failure rate.

I keep my 12" vinyl in milk crates. Never really bought many cds.

My mp3 collection is spread out over a couple computers, I definitely need to do a refresh and consolidation. But if I did lose a computer I wouldn't be missing much that wasn't already stored elsewhere.
